Horstead Church.
Ideas arising from my time as artist in residence.
Grafitti on the font - light installation (4)
The writings of, ‘Julian of Norwich,’ written in acrylic pens and soft pastels, then projected in a light installation onto the font. This allowed people to look again at this ancient symbol. The viewer could also pass in front of the font and wear the words on their body.
(This installation could be upscaled, a project I am currently working on. )
Monoprint Stained glass window installation (5)(6)
Monoprinting onto transparent Japanese rice paper, then working on the multi-layered surface with gold ink and soft pastels.
The monoprints represent the whispering of centuries of voices of prayer in the church. The way they move easily in the currants of air, mean they both represent the sometimes fragile nature of human and the call for help As well as the reply received, gentle in nature interpretation of Tibetan prayer flags, believed to bring healing.
Installation of writing, originally commissioned by Julian of Norwich to mark the 600th anniversary of Julian of Norwich in 2023. A 7 meter long writing installation based on the words of Julian, ‘All Shall Be Well and All Shall Be Well and All Manner of thing Shall Be Well.’
Using the font as a backdrop for a light installation, as well as the stained glass window for monotypes, formed the beginning of a dialogue between ancient symbols of church and contemporary art.
During the weekend I also took elements of my artists workshop into the church. I ran workshops on gelli plate printing using acrylic paint, stencils and Japanese rice paper, the results of which were used a part of a collective exhibit.
